INCREASING THE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN LISTENING BY USING VCD MEDIA AT THE EIGHTH CLASS STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI I SIROMBU

Abstract

Listening is considered the most important one in learning English because listening is an activity to grasp what others say. A student can understand instructions and explanations the teacher gave by listening well. Therefore, listening should learn by the students by using VCD media to emerge the students' attention and motivation.In this research, the researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the research method. The subject of this research is students in Class VIII-A SMP Negeri 1 Sirombu. The procedures of the action implementation consist of planning, action, observation, and reflection.In Cycle I, the average of the students’ mark in listening by using VCD media is 50.56. There were 24 students at a very low level, 10 students at a low level, 4 students at an inadequate level, 1 student at a high level, and no one at a very high level. The highest score was 82 and the lowest was 26. It showed that no student could be classified in very high level, a student in high level, 4 students inadequate level, 10 students in low level, and 24 students in very low level.In Cycle II, the average mark in this cycle was 80.54. it shows that there was a development in listening through VCD media. In this Cycle, there was no student in very low level, 3 students in low level, 11 students inadequate level, 17 student in high level, and 8 students in very high level. The highest score was 93 and the lowest was 60. It can be said that the students were successful, which caused the research to finish.From this research, it can conclude that using VCD media in the classroom can increase the students’ ability in listening.
